「世界で一番幸せな人物」と、休み休み仕事をすること

ツイッター経由で探した記事。「なんで休みなく働いている人が偉いの？」というタイトルにつられて読んでみた。大切なことだから書いておく。

多くの学者は、「世界で一番幸せな人物」になったことが人生で数回ある。すべての時間を注ぎ込んで、渾身の力を込めて発表した独創的なペーパーが成功した時。何十倍かの競争の中で、他の誰でもなく、自分が常勤の教員として選ばれて採用されたとき。栄誉ある学術賞を受けたとき。私の先生は、そういうときの若い学者を「世界で一番幸せな人物」と呼んでいた。私自身にもそういう瞬間が何回かあった。私はそのことを誇りにしている。他の若い学者にそういう成功があったときには、心を込めて祝福する。

しかし、なんて危険な仕掛けなんだろう。これらの成功は、すぐに、形骸化して、空虚なものになり、人生そのものを雲散霧消させる黒い罠である。成功して高く評価されたため、仕事を頼まれる、栄誉なことだし、虚栄心が満足するから引き受ける。その結果、自分が処理できるよりはるかに多い仕事を引き受けて、人生が支離滅裂になる。そして、もっと致命的なことに、その学問が支離滅裂になっていく。

でも、世界で一番幸せな人物になろうとする努力を、否定できる学者は少ない。それを求める志向と、学問の水準を維持する志向の二つを両立させることが、水準が高い学問を確立して維持するための義務だと思う。だから、私は、休み休み仕事をするようにしている。この大切なことに気が付くのが、少し遅かったのかもしれないけれども。

熊本のハンセン病療養院である菊池恵楓園で開催された日本ハンセン病学会に参加した。ペーパーを読むほかに、恵楓園の中をゆっくりと歩き回り、熊本の加藤清正の廟であった本妙寺という日蓮宗の寺を訪ね、学会参加記念にいただいた三冊の書物を眺めた。

 

恵楓園の空間は広々として緑が多く、どこにも深い人性の趣きがあった。東京ドーム12個分だそうで、周囲を歩いて一周すると1時間くらいはかかるかもしれない。かつては、ハンセン病に侵されると失明したり弱視になったため、農作業などに出た患者たちを音を用いて自分の居場所がわかるようにする仕組みを作る必要があった。昔は風で回る鐘があったが、現在では、盲導鈴（もうどうれい）という機械仕掛けのものがあり、そこから音楽が流れている。私が聞いた音楽は「みかんの花咲く丘」という1947年に発表された名曲だった。戦後に入院した患者たちにきっと人気がある歌だったのだろう。別の場所だと別の音楽が流れていて、それを聞き分けていくと、広い園内のどこにいるかが分かるとのこと。私は、一曲しか聞くことができなかったけれども。きっと、恵楓園を再訪する機会があるだろうから、その折に聞いてみよう。　

 

本妙寺も面白かった。加藤清正の廟であり、日蓮宗の大きな寺であった。江戸時代には身延久遠寺、池上本門寺などの日蓮宗の寺にハンセン病者が集まったこともあり、また風評だが、清正がハンセン病にかかっているといううわさもあったからという。だいたい30名から150名の患者が集まっていたという。1940年に一掃されて、各地の療養所に送り込まれたという。ハンセン病部落の痕跡みたいなものは、私には見つけられなかった。清正が飼っていたサルが論語を読んで賢かったことを記念した石像があったので、感心してロウソクをお供えした。「頭をなであげろ」と書いてあると思い、「なであげる」というのも少し不思議な日本語だと思いながら、頭を上の方になであげてあげたところ、実は「頭をなでてあげろ」と書いてあったとのこと。そんなに大きな間違いではない（笑）

 

いただいた三冊の本は、いずれも生き生きとした情報が多かった。　『百年の星霜』の末尾の野上先生の言葉を引用しておく。

 

「ハンセン病はもはや、不可解な病気とはいえない。科学的に解明されつつある一疾患である。苦難多き時代を入所者と共に園を支えてきた先輩諸氏をはじめ、皆にこのことを知らせたい思いをこめて、この百周年記念誌の編集に携わった。長年この病に苦しめられた人々にも、はっきりとそう伝え、治っているのだから安心して余生を送ってくださいと言い、未だに偏見の呪縛から逃れられない人々にも、誠意をもってすれば、きっと心に届くと信じて、真実を伝える努力を続けたいと思う。」

 

 

 

『日米会話手帳』を読んでみました

朝日新聞社. 『日米会話手帳』はなぜ売れたか. 朝日文庫. 朝日新聞社, 1995.

 

昭和20年に売り出して、3か月で300万部を売りきった、幻と伝説のベストセラーの『日米会話手帳』についての本を買った。多少の回想録と思い出などがついているが、やはり目当ては、原文36頁の写真版である。アイデアの原型になったものとして英語の本が参照されているが、実際は、大東亜共栄圏で売り出していた会話マニュアルで、日本ー中国もの、日本―タイものなども参考にされているという。英語に訳したのは、東大の院生で西洋古代史の研究者であった板倉勝正という学者だったとのこと。

 

書物としては、店、道、駅での会話を想定した場面が非常に多い。店でちょっと買い物をして、道で行き先を聞いて、必要であれば電車か汽車に乗るときの場面でどんな会話が必要かという設定である。ちなみに、アメリカ人が行きたがる場所の一つが　Gay-quarters で、これは「慰安所」と訳されている。gay という単語は色々な意味があるし、今から70年前のアメリカ英語とかイギリス英語とか実際難しいが、これは念のため辞書を引いてみて、花街の意味があることを確認した。アメリカ人が gay quarter に行きたがったのか、大東亜共栄圏の日本人が慰安所に行きたかったのか、そこは調べてみないと分からないけど。

科学イラストと２０世紀の人体 － 新刊書

数年前までアメリカ国立医学図書館の歴史部門の責任者であった Michael Sappol 先生。来日して慶應でお話ししてくださったこともある。退職してスウェーデン（だったかな？）で悠々自適の生活を送られているとのこと。　サッポル 先生の新刊で、ドイツのカガクケイイラストレーターであった Fritz Kahn のイラストを中心にした著作。　表紙のカーンのセクシー・ダイナマイト・アンドロイド風の作品は有名ですが、内容を見ると、面白い作品が目白押し。科学イラストの素材が満載で、それをサッポル先生が分析してくださっているという著作。 英語 Kindle だと 3300 円。翻訳されたら、色々な経路で、この本はきっと売れます！　また、日本でも同じような伝統があり、分析してくれる著作が出るでしょう。　イラストはこのような感じです。

adust と melancholy と医化学派

今日のOED英単語は adust. 　意味としては過度に熱された、陽光で焦げたなど。もとはラテン語で中世フランス語を経て英語に。医学の体液論を経たらしく、体液が加熱されて焦げたという意味が第一の意味。どの体液でもいいが、胆汁に関して言及されることが一番多い。もともと熱く乾いている体液だからなのか、そのあたりはよく分からない。例文を読んでいると、錬金術や医化学派の影響が感じられるような気がする。もちろん、ガレノス派でもパラケルスス派でも過度に熱するという過程は中枢であるから、ガレニズムだけでも出てくる概念だけれども、機械的な過程が感じられる。Milton, Paradise Lost, xii, 635. Of the four humours, choler appears to have been the most often described as adust. Adust humours, esp. adust melancholy, were believed to be the source of mental and emotional symptoms as well as physical illness.

Atlas Obscura から面白い企画。＜静止した動画＞ cinemagraph の事例。波が全体としてはまったく静止しているのに、水はダイナミックに動いて奔流となっている、矛盾が生きたまま凍り付いたような不思議な動画。大きなインスピレーションになる。　このサイトの中で紹介されている The Infinite Now というサイトでは、この静止した動画に音楽をつけるということもしている。演奏されている音楽がこの概念にあっているかどうかは分からない。

 

原理が分かると Photoshop でも作れるとのこと。
