延喜式祝詞で農耕肥料を妨害する罪であった「屎戸」について

日吉で青木先生の著作の延喜式の「天津罪」「国津罪」に関する議論、ことに「屎戸」に関する議論を読んでメモしておいた。
 
いくつかの重要で説得力があるポイントがある。罪とされているそれぞれの行為が、スサノオノミコトが古事記や日本書紀で行ったとされていることと関連があることはもちろん事実である。しかし、それ以前から行われていた罪と祓（はらえ）の概念で考えることが正しい。そしてその罪と祓は古代の農耕社会において重要である。その脈絡の中で「屎戸」を理解するのがよい。
 
実際に、「畔放ち」（あはなち）「溝埋め」（みぞうめ）「樋放ち」（ひはなち）は、あぜ、溝、木で作った水の通路を破壊することで、農耕社会、ことに水田の耕作に対する妨害の行為である。「頻蒔き」（しきまき）は、人が一度種をまいた上に重ねて種をまくこと、いわば播種の阻害である。「串刺」（くしざし）は家畜を刺して殺すことで、「生剥」（いきはぎ）「逆剥」（さかはぎ）とつながり、いずれも家畜殺害の罪である。
 
そして問題の「屎戸」である。「くそと」か「くそへ」なのか、読み方に関する議論がとてもとても難しい。青木先生に従い、とりあえず「くそと」と読んでおく。意味は、農耕肥料であった屎で、その屎にのろいをかけ、相手の農耕生活を阻害する呪術行為であるという。この時期や少しあとの時代には、屎を農耕肥料として用いていたという記述がある。

angina pectoris 狭心症 の概念

今日の「あんてい」の箇所で stable angina (pectoris) という用語が示してあった。angina pectoris が安定するのは安定狭心症といい、狭心症である状態が数か月のあいだ継続してということ。これはOK. ふと angina pectoris を調べたくなって、優れた医学史の図書館にいるともっと調べることができるのだけれども、 OED などで確認。

angina は 16世紀にラテン語・ギリシア語に起源をもつ医学の概念。口腔や口での感染や痛みで、飲み込んだり息をすることが難しくなる状態。基本的には患者も意識する痛みの状態である。それに pectus の単数所有格であるpectoris をつけて 胸の中の痛みという形にした疾病の名前が現れたのは18世紀の末である。 pectoris と胸部の中の現象に一致したという方向に進んだ。なるほど。

医療英会話キーワード辞典。一日3ページずつ音読。今日はpp.22-24, 「あるがまま」から「あわい（淡い）」まで。
 
面白いことをいくつか。まずアルミニウムはアメリカ英語とイギリス英語でスペルも発音も違うことを発見。前者が  aluminum で第二音節にアクセント、後者は aluminium で第一音節にアクセント。次に「アルコール」と「アレルギー」が全体で1ページ以上もの英語を掲げていて驚いた。アルコールでは、薬を飲むことと酒を飲むことを上手に一つの文章に入れ、前者は take 後者は drink 。

『ピグマリオン』冒頭の下町言葉

ジョージ・バーナード・ショウの『ピグマリオン』の冒頭近くの下町言葉の部分を読んでみた。映画でも有名な部分である。これまで読んでいなかったことを恥ずかしく思う。

それと同時に、正直言って、冒頭のいくつかのセリフは全く分からない。赤で強調しておいた。全然分からない。これはリザという名前の女性で、映画ではオードリー・ヘプバーンも演じた部分だが、本当に手も足も出ない。青で書かれているように、ロンドン以外の場所ではまったく分からないだろうと言っているが、その通りである。

この部分が終わると、幾つかの私には目新しい単語が入っているが、とりあえず分かるセリフである。

 

 

ACT I
Covent Garden at 11.15 p.m. Torrents of heavy summer rain. Cab whistles blowing frantically in all directions. Pedestrians running for shelter into the market and under the portico of St. Paul's Church, where there are already several people, among them a lady and her daughter in evening dress. [She sits down on the plinth of the column, sorting her flowers, on the lady's right. She is not at all an attractive person. She is perhaps eighteen, perhaps twenty, hardly older. She wears a little sailor hat of black straw that has long been exposed to the dust and soot of London and has seldom if ever been brushed. Her hair needs washing rather badly: its mousy color can hardly be natural. She wears a shoddy black coat that reaches nearly to her knees and is shaped to her waist. She has a brown skirt with a coarse apron. Her boots are much the worse for wear. She is no doubt as clean as she can afford to be; but compared to the ladies she is very dirty. Her features are no worse than theirs; but their condition leaves something to be desired; and she needs the services of a dentist].
