エスプレッソから帝国主義時代の文化財返還問題について

今日のエスプレッソ。犬の深遠な賢さ、イアン・フレミングの不倫の恋の手紙の話題、どれも楽しかった。しかし、楽しい話題というより、深さを持ち、将来の学術に大きな影響を与えるだろう記事があり、それが repatriation 文化財返還問題についての記事である。色々と考えさせられた。

大英博物館とエジプトの論争で名高いロゼッタ・ストーンや、同じく大英博物館とギリシアの論争となったエルギン・マーブルなどで名高い問題である。この記事によると、ケンブリッジがアフリカのベニン族に美しい鳥の彫刻を返還し、フランスがサーベルをセネガルに変換したという。これらが自国の博物館に収納され、きちんとした研究が進むというのは最善の方法である。また、現地の文化財を環境や自然環境などの中に返すことは、正しいことだろうと思う。

ベニン族の美しい鳥の彫像。これがケンブリッジ大学から地元に戻るとのこと。ケンブリッジで進んだ研究にもかかわらず、そこでは見えなかった何かが見えるのでしょうね。

そうすると、倉敷のゲッティンゲン文庫も、向こうの大学に返却するべきなのかもしれない。

今日のDNB は『赤毛のアン』のモンゴメリー。しばらく前には基本的にはアメリカだと思っていたフランシス・バーネットが取り上げられ、そこで読んだ『秘密の花園』は医学史の角度からの強いインパクトを持っていることを知った。

今日はカナダだと思っていたモンゴメリーが取り上げられていた。こちらは第一作を書いて牧師と結婚して作品を書くというパタンだったとのこと。『赤毛のアン』も実は読んだことがないです。しばらく前に『花子とアン』という朝ドラが大人気が出てしまったことに、アンの底力に感じ入りました。DNBによると世界中で圧倒的な人気があるのは日本とポーランドであるとのこと。

今日の難語

いつもは別の意味で知っている単語が医学の文脈で別の意味になるケース。本当にたくさんあるのですね。今日は patent と indirect でした。

patent: of a vessel, ducts, or aperture, open and unobstructed.

indirect: conducted through intermediaries. この場合は骨に作用するときに肉などを間接に使うという意味

たまたまBBCを見ていたら、東京オリンピックにちなんで2020年日本特集のような記事と写真特集があり、あまりに楽しいのでいくつかの記事を読んでしまった。イギリスに行くと、日本は「何が何だかよく分からないが、幸せそうだし、まじめだから、放っておくと彼ら・彼女らはそれでOKである」という枠組みが非常に確固たるものになっている。私もそう思われている。私はイギリスもそうだと思っている。

記事は二つ。一つは現在の最先端技術の日本が世界で無敵のアナログ文化を誇っていること。もう一つは21世紀に新しく展開している困惑する茶道があること。これは本当にその通りであり、イギリス人が立てる重要な現象ですね（笑）

ごく最近のDNBがめちゃめちゃ面白い。人物は Luke Howard (1772-1864)。実業家、化学者、敬虔なクエイカーのキリスト教徒、そして何よりも気象学者として輝いていた。私がこれまで知らなかったのだが、The Climate of London というロンドンの気象や雲について初期の重要な書物を書き、それを読んだゲーテが陶酔するほど感動し、イギリスの風景画家たちであるコンスタブルやターナーに影響を与えたらしいという。ぜひお読みください。ケンブリッジから2巻本で出ていますが、私は買っておきました！また、気象学の歴史について、読むと有益な本があれば教えてくださいな！
