毎月一回服用の新しい21世紀のピル

お待ちかねの土曜日のエスプレッソ。今回も楽しい記事で、ボクシングの話、アリアナ・グランデたちの2010年代のヒット歌手の話など、とても面白かった。しかし、ここは医学史研究者としては、21世紀の新型の毎月一回服用のピルの話をメモ。

毎日服用するタイプのピルは、もちろん有効である。ただ、毎日服用が多少乱れると排卵が起きてしまい、アメリカのピル服用者のうち9%が失敗して妊娠してしまうとのこと。それを乗り越えるために毎月一回服用して有効な新しいピルを開発しており、現段階ではブタで実験したら29日間は有効であるとのこと。これは、HIVやマラリアを対する薬などを入れる容器の開発が重要であるとのこと。これは21世紀の発展途上国の女性にとっての新しいピルであるとのこと。

ブタの次は人間の女性で実験するのだろうと思う。1950年代に実験が行われた時には、アメリカの白人女性ではなく、プエルトリコの貧困で文盲の女性たちを使い、副作用が非常に強く、頭痛や嘔吐などが多く、3人が死亡したという良くないエピソードであった。このことをきちんと認識して、今回は安全な実験ができるでしょうか。

Manuscript Workshop

チューリヒで Manuscript Workshop （MW)　に出てきました。私が経験したことがなかったので、最初は構造がよく分からなかったのですが、とてもいいものがある制度ですね。すさまじい厳しさと建設的な意見の双方が共存して、最後には後者に向かうという構造です。私の学生も、PhDを英語で書き、時間のやりくり、資金のやりくりなどができれば、英語で原稿を書き、海外から先生を呼ぶということをやってみようと思います。

おそらく日本語ではPhDを書いた学生がそれを本にするときに、原稿を囲んで、批判的なディスカッションをするということは、日本でもやっているかもしれませんね。

19世紀末から20世紀初頭のロンドンの地図

戦前期東京の精神病院の患者の歴史を都市の一区画の歴史として考える仕事をはじめていて、都市と精神病院に関係について考えている。その中で19世紀末のロンドンの地図を観たのでメモ。

チャールズ・ブースのロンドン貧富地図は多くの人たちが眺めているだろう。19世紀末から20世紀初頭に関して、ロンドンのどの通りは富裕で、どの通りは貧しいかを地図で表現したものである。ロンドンの通りを7段階に分け、富裕な最上層は Upper middle and upper classes.  Wealthy であり、貧しい最下層は Lowest class.  Vicious, semi-criminal というすさまじい表現を受けている。自分たちが住んだところを見ると、ロンドン大学の寮なので、高級な地域にも住んでいたが、ポスドクとして暮らすようになると、ちょうど真ん中のMixed.  Some confortable, others poor.  という通りにも住んでいた。その周囲には、あちこちにセミ犯罪者たちが住む最下層の通りがあった。今でも危ないから近寄らなかった通りもあり、今ではとてもよくなった通りもあった。

外国のホテルの部屋のインスタント・コーヒー

ヨーロッパのホテルに泊まると、そこに必ずあるのが、インスタント・コーヒーや紅茶のバッグである。そこで必ず飲むのが、インスタント・コーヒーにお砂糖を一杯、小さな容器のミルクを一杯入れてできる、白いインスタント・コーヒーである。いつもは飲まないが、出張で泊まる外国のホテルだと必ず飲む。

 

このコーヒーは、私が小学生の時に父親が飲んだコーヒー、あるいは私たちが一緒に飲んだコーヒーだった。あの頃は、家ではまだインスタント・コーヒーを飲む時代だった。お砂糖を入れたり、クリープなどの乳製品などを入れたりして、それを飲みながら父親と話をする時間は楽しかった。平日の夜に一緒に飲んだり、週末には父親が庭や畑で彼が幸せになる仕事をして、その合間にコーヒーを所望する。そうすると、本を読んでいた私が、ヤカンでお湯を沸かして白いインスタント・コーヒーを入れたりしていた。

チューリヒの教会

チューリヒは、おそらく前に一度は来ている。ジュネーヴやローザンヌと少し混じってしまうのだけれども、湖と接しているあの感じは確かに見た記憶がある。今回の仕事が順調に進んだので、教会を観てきた。大学の中のホテルから10分ほどあるくと古い中心街にある、グロスミュンスターの教会とフラウミュンスターの教会である。いずれも初期中世に設立され、11世紀からの繁栄、宗教改革の興隆、現代美術のシャガールやジャコメッティのステンドグラスなどが、不思議な空間を作っていた。ぼうっとして色々なことを思い出していた。冬のチューリヒにふさわしい寒さの中で、エレガントなお店や、クリスマスの賑やかさが感じられるた売店の中を歩いて帰って来て、午後の仕事をした。
