AI in the sky: bird migration

Billions of birds journey between wintering and breeding grounds each year. Hundreds of millions never reach their destination. Many die from collisions with man-made structures. Dimming bright lights and slowing wind turbines would save avian lives, but the whimsical pulses of bird movement have proved tricky to plan for. A new forecasting system could help. To design it, two bright sparks used 23 years of data from almost 150 radar stations across America. The network picks up atmospheric conditions but, when filtered correctly, also captures reflections caused by bird migration. They plugged this information into an algorithm, training it to recognise patterns and make predictions. The model can forecast movements up to a week in advance with decent accuracy. Air temperature appears the most crucial factor: during balmy early May evenings, upwards of 400m birds are expected to take flight across America alone. The team are now looking forward to giving their first autumnal forecasts.
