The more sophisticated medicine practiced by physicians during the Warring States period also acknowledged the possibility of the invasion of evil energy 邪気 xieqi. It defined the body as a holistic, microcosmic system in correlation with the universal activity of yin and yang and the five agents. Normally, yin and yang types of vital energy 精気 (jingqi) harmoniously circulated along networks of vessels 脈 (mo) and meridians 経 (jing) administered by the five zang-organs 五臓 (wuzang) and the six fu-organs 六腑 (liufu), the latter two groups generally corresponding to the vital organs. The consequences of the disruption of the regular rhythms of the patient's vital energy were diagnosed through examination of the pulse along with other symptoms, including dreams. The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon of Medicine 黄帝内経 (Huangdi meijing) advised that "dreams can also help us diagnose a person's illness. If one dreams of fearfully crossing large body of ware, this indicates an excess of yin. If one dreams of flames or fire, this indicates an excess of yang.
これを英語で読むのに、たとえば 英語、日本語、中国語で読むべきなのだろうか。vital energy, sei-ki, or jingqi、five organs, gozo or wuzangというように読むことである。それが私にとっては素直な読み方である。五臓を wuzang と読むことはなく、gozoと読み、その後に、中国語でいうとwuzang という形で頭が働く。しかし、 英語、中国語、日本語も自然である。five organs, wuzang, gozo である。ところが、gozo が出てくるのがこの文章では wuzang より遅い。だから、やはり、日本の伝統にかなって、返り点をうつのがよい（笑） five organs 五臓 ✔ wuzang である。こうすると、まず five organs, そして一句をとばして wuzang を読み、そのあとで 五臓を読めばいい（爆）
