“One Child Nation”: China’s one-child policy
“Of all the things in the world, people are the most precious,” Mao Zedong, founder of communist China, announced in 1949. He believed that population growth would create a strong labour force; instead the country ran out of food. With propaganda campaigns not doing enough to stymie the birth rate, in 1979 the Communist Party announced that most couples could only have one baby (though there were exceptions). “One Child Nation”, a new documentary, explores the devastating repercussions of that policy. One midwife interviewed estimates that she performed between 50,000-60,000 forced sterilisations and abortions, many of them under duress. Some babies were trafficked or put into corrupt state-run orphanages; others were killed shortly after birth, or simply left to die. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that Chinese mainlanders will get the opportunity to reflect on this dark episode in their country’s history. The harrowing film will not make it past the country’s strict censors.
