今日のエスプレッソから面白い記事。NYのメトロポリタン美術館が1月末から開催する展覧会である。タイトルは Sahel: Art and Empires on the Shores of the Sahara.  もともと sahel という言葉は「岸辺」を意味し、南側の緑が豊かな地域から見た時に、乾燥したサハラ砂漠へとつながっていく岸辺である。サハラ砂漠が東西に幅広いので、その境界地域のサヘルも東西に広く、地理の教科書を見ると、アフリカ大陸を東西に横切る細い帯のようである。西側はセネガルの北部とモーリタニアの南部にはじまり、マリ、ブルキナファソアルジェリアニジェール、ナイジェリア、カメルーン、チャド、スーダンとつながっていき、エリトリアエチオピアの北部で終わる。
 
今回のNYの展示では、この西側の部分に光が当てられる。ビデオは非常に面白いけれども、観に行くのは難しいだろうし、カタログは8,000円以上もする。ううむ。

座位のところで Fowler position という言葉が出てきて、どなたかしらと思って調べたら、面白い経歴などでメモ。George Ryerson Fowler (1848-1906) という外科医である。13歳の時に鉄道会社の修理工場に弟子入りする。そこで鉄道事故で負傷した人物を助けたときに医学に興味を持ち、NYの医学学校に入学して1871年に卒業し、ブルックリンなどで外科の仕事をする。病院で外科の仕事をすることが多く、ヨーロッパで発展した麻酔や消毒などを最初に用いた外科医である。

 

ファウラー座位は座った時の姿勢と角度の問題。たくさんの図で示されている。オリジナルも、きっとシンプルに幾何学的な表象なのだろうなと思う。
