土曜日のエクスプレスより

先週の週末は、エコノミスト・エクスプレスからの記事を載せられず失礼しました。もちろん非常に面白かったです。ベルギーのヘント (Ghent) の美術館が、ファン・エイクの作品を中心にして、登場する人物や動物などの表情を分析する展覧会をしているとのこと、MeToo が映画となったとのこと、アメリカのスーパーボールの新しいスターの話など、どれも面白買ったです。しかし、非常に面白かったのが、アメリカのペンシルヴァニアの小さな街で催されている「ウッドチャックの日」という行事の話と、ミツバチの疾病と環境医学を通じた予防に関する話でした。

 

前者は別の記事にしますが、後者はミツバチとハチミツの経済的な重要性と、その疾病が近年起こした大きなダメージと、そこから脱出する新しい方法の話です。ミツバチが重要な最大の理由は、ハチミツが経済的に非常に重要で、アメリカに一年200億ドルの利益をもたらしているとのこと。しかし、2018年にミツバチの間に大疾病が流行し、巨大な被害が出たこと。そこには病原体のウィルスと、それと媒介するダニのような小動物がいて、複雑な構成の中でミツバチの幼生が疾病を経験すること。そこで科学者たちが、この複雑なエコロジーにうまく働きかけて、病原体とこの病原体を排除する方法を発見したとのこと。とても面白い話です。

プロジェクト「ダウン症の子供たちの写真展を国連でやりたい!」にご協力してください!

日本ダウン症の会の雑誌の編集者で、しばらく前にマッギル大学の教授のデイヴィッド・ライトの講演会を組織した上原公子さまからのメール。3月末から NYの国連本部で、ダウン症を中心に、障害を持つ子供たちの写真展が開催されます。その写真展に寄付金をいただき、写真展が実現されると、日本の市民の社会的な成熟をNYと国際社会に示すことができます。上原さんのお言葉に励まされて、私も少額の寄付をいたしました。

会報に何度か取り上げたことがある、写真家の名畑文巨(なばた ふみお/大阪府住)さんが、3月21日「世界ダウン症の日」の前後(3月16日から27日)に、世界ダウン症連合(DSI)が毎年会議をするNYの国連本部でダウン症のある子どもたちの写真展を開催します。日本、イギリス、ミャンマー南アフリカダウン症のある子どもたちと家族の写真です。

彼は、ダウン症のある子の親ではなく、子ども専門のプロの写真家で業界ではかなり知られた人。JDSが主催して東京・青山にある伊藤忠のギャラリーで英国初の写真展を開催したとき、障害の世界では有名な長瀬修先生に勧められて観たことが、すべての始まりです。


そこから彼は、ライフワークとして、ダウン症をはじめとする障害のある子どもたちを撮ることを決意したのです。

「親でもないのに。。。」と最初は思いましたが、驚くほど純粋にダウン症のある子にぐいぐいひかれていることが伝わってきて、私は個人的に、ずっと支援してきました。

今回の写真展は、当初の予定にはなかったものです。今年のオリンピック・パラリンピックに向けて関連行事として写真展を開催したいと積極的に動いていたときに、たまたま外務省の協力を得て道が開けたものです。何とかNY展を成功させてほしい!

ということで、彼は今、クラウドファンディングでNY展の資金集めをしています。出だしは良かったのですが、思ったより厳しい状況になり、目標100万円のところ、残り11日であと39万円。レディーフォーというクラウドファンディングの老舗サイトですがここは、目標額に達しないとすべてパーになってしまう厳しいルールを設けています。
