Covid-19の死者数の信頼性

 
先日の英語のセミナーで学生に鋭い質問をされた。20世紀前半の麻疹の死者数はどの程度信用できるのかという質問である。これはこたえたけれども、もちろん covid-19 の死者数の信頼性と深い関係がある。たまたまアメリカにおける死者数の信頼性に関してのとても面白い記事があったので資料として保存しておいた。
 
 
 
 
20世紀前半の麻疹であれば、その数は比較的信頼できる。全ての症例に関して、かなり鮮明な発疹が出て、それから多くの場合に治るパターンだからである。ただ、同じ時期に風疹の流行があったりすると、分かりにくい事例はあると思う。私が、検査用の機材や薬剤を持っていないとしたら、間違えるケースもあるだろう。このあたりは、麻疹と風疹を区別して診断されたお医者さんに伺ってみたい。参考のために、google で出た画像を出してみました。

Covid-19 の読み取りに関しては、はるかに難しい。もちろん、信頼できる検査用の道具を広めたので、安定した部分はもちろんできているし発展している。しかし、それがない場合には、症状の読み方は非常に難しい。もともと保菌者が大量に発生する感染症である。症状が出ないケースも非常に多い。出た場合でも、それがcovid-19 によるという結論を出すのは難しい。"Covid-19 symptom" で google を検索すると、もちろん図表は山のように出てくるが、写真は一枚も出てこない。
 
ことさらに強調するわけではありませんが、ニューヨークではバスを並べて霊柩棟の代わりに使っているとのこと。その死因判定は本当に正しいのか聞いてみたいという姿勢には、確かに共感しますね。

Covid-19とアートのメッセージ

今日のエスプレッソもとても楽しかった。ロシアのカタリーナ女王をヘレン・ミレンが演じるドラマができるとか、環境のディザスターで世界が滅びるフランスのコミックとか、面白い記事ばかり。その中で covid-19 とアートの作品が現れたことに関する、とても面白い記事があった。
 
Covid-19 が日本でも収束に入りつつあり、さまざまなアートが制作されることだろう。ロックダウンにより、アーティストたちが仕事をする時間と空間が作られる。もちろん、音楽で言えば売り上げは落ちるし、ツアーもないし、ミーティングもなくて水準が高い製作は難しいだろう。絵画に関しても、何々展は中止され、絵の具を買いに行くのも難しいのかもしれない。しかし、仕事をする静かな時間と空間は、非常にたくさんある。大学の教員としてそれは実感できます。
 
その中で Charli XCX という女性の歌手が how i'am feeling now という作品を発表した。発売は 2020年の5月15日であるから、つい昨日である。写真をみると、カメラで自撮りをしている画像が使われている。歌を聴いてみたけど、ちょっと歌詞は分からない(笑)でも、音楽はなかなかいい。
 
これは歴史の中の一つのパターンである。パンデミックが起きると、あるいは起きていることを知ると、文化の中でアートのメッセージが現れる。そして、このことは、非常に古い歴史を持っている。テュキディデースの『ペロポンネソス戦争』でもいいし、その気になったら『ギルガメシュ』でもいい。中世になったら『ボッカチオ』だとかの超有名な作品がならぶ。

濃厚接触の発見と検出についての二つの方法

まだよく分からないながらも、covid-19 の濃厚接触の発見と検出のソフトウェアについて数日前にマークした BBCの記事を読む。2020年5月7日の記事では、このシステムは2つにわかれつつあるとのこと。イギリスが進もうとしているのが中央化されたもの、GoogleApple が考えているのが非中央化のもの。図を使って説明されており、私にとっては少し分かりやすくなったのでメモ。

二人の人物 A と B が出会う。そこでキーコードが交換される。その後、Aが感染した時、Aは自分の状態をスマートフォンを使って連絡する。そこで中央化と非中央化の違いが出てくる。中央化だとAの情報とBの情報、そしてB以外にもキーコードを交換した C, D, E... の情報がスマホから送られ、そのシステムを分析して中央からスマホに情報が行く。非中央化だと Aの情報だけが送られ、その情報がスマホの上で集計される。少しずつ分かってきました(笑)

日本はどうなんだろうと考えると同時に、各国が色々な方向に舵を取っているという現象も面白い。特に、医学史の研究者としては、非常に面白い。私が知る限りでは19世紀から、同じ感染症に対して、公衆衛生の原理的な方法がヨーロッパやアメリカの各国において大きく異なってくるが、これがなぜ変わるのかという問題を、アッカークネヒトとボールドウィンの議論を検討したのは記憶に残っているし、これを HIV/AIDS に適用しても面白い。

トロイ展と富士山とテラナキ山

少し時間ができたので、大英博物館のトロイ展のカタログをしばらく見た。トロイは私の人生の中でかなり重要な部分である。小さな頃からシュリーマンの自伝風の物語は愛読書だった。発掘現場に友人の医学教授のフィルヒョーが現れて、まるで能のような謎のプレゼントをして、それが問題を解決するという名場面がある場面はよく覚えている。ホメロスの『イーリアス』の作品は大学生になってから愛読書になった。この訳者が呉茂一で、精神医学者の呉秀三の息子であることは、当時はまったく気がつかなかった。そんな、どうでもいいことを思い出しながら、少しの間だけ、一部分を熱心に読んだ。
 
その中で、不思議な錯覚をした部分がある。2010年から2011年にかけて、ニュージーランドの版画家である Marian Maguire さんの作品をみた。19世紀後半にNZのマオリ族が白人たちに抵抗する計画を立てていたことと、トロイの戦争をかぶせた作品で、これ自体もとても面白い。しかし、その背景の中心が富士山だとしばらく思い込んで、どういう意味があるのだろうと一生懸命考えていた。1秒や2秒という話ではなく、1分か2分くらいである。もちろん本文に説明は書いてあって、これはテラナキ山 (Mount Teranaki) という山で、NZの名勝である。
