エコノミストのチャット・ショー

今日のEconomist Espresso は、珍しく、いつもほど面白くはなかったので、エコノミストのサイトを少し眺めてみた。その中で、The Economist Asks というコーナーがあった。英語でいうと chat show というらしい。あまり詳しくは存じ上げていないが、Anne McElvoy というジャーナリストがいる。Independent にも連載していたとのこと。彼女が、重要な政治家や評論家や知識人たちを30分ほどインタビューして、それを音声で提供するというコーナーである。しばらく聞いてみたら、内容も面白いし、それを語る雰囲気も面白い。しばらく前に、NHK World にインタビューされてTVでの番組作成に参加して、色々と学んだこと、反省したことも多い。6月末には「医学史と社会の対話」でそのような企画をするので、そんなことを気にしながら、楽しい有益な chat show を聴いていた。

 

最新の企画は covid-19 と NY のレストラン街での活動の記事。楽しいインタビューでとても面白かったです。

『生粋のイングランド人』を頂きました!

ダニエル・デフォーが書いた The True-Born Englishman (1700-1701) とその周辺の文書を翻訳した書物を頂きました。西山徹先生、高谷修先生、服部典之先生、そして福本宰之先生によるお仕事です。どうもありがとうございます!
 
研究というか教育の絶妙なタイミングにどんぴしゃだったご翻訳でしたし、実は、数年前にも、先生方から同じような完璧なタイミングで 翻訳を頂いたことがあります。あれは、私が論文のために薬の歴史を勉強し始めたころで、読まなければならない文献が非常にたくさんあった時期でした。サミュエル・ガースの『薬局』を先生方が翻訳してくださり、何かのご縁で頂くことができました。これが非常に豊かな翻訳でした。もともとは医師と薬剤師の論争の一つであり、そこに古典古代へのアリュージョンと、当時の政党間の闘争が織り込まれている、私が読むには非常な集中力が必要な資料でしたが、それの翻訳を理想的なタイミングでいただくことができました。『日本医史学雑誌』にも書評を書かせていただきました。
 
今回は、たまたま今日の午後にオンラインでイギリスの病院の仕組みを講義する授業があります。そこで ダニエル・デフォーの An Essay upon Projects などとともにPolitical Writings が Kindle で150円くらいであったので、ちょうど買っておき、そこに The True Born Englishman も入っていました。これも、ヘビーな文献で、きちんと読むには当時の時事を理解しなればならない文献でしたが、それを全て説明してくださっている翻訳です。ありがとうございます! 今日の午後の授業の前に読み、あたかもデフォーをマスターしているかのようにいたします!

スーザン・コリンズの叙事詩

土曜日のエスプレッソもとても面白かった。苦悩の画家と薬中毒の犯罪者のねじれたビデオの話、グラインドボーンのオペラの話、サンゴ礁を守る話など、私が好きな記事ばかりで楽しかった。その中から、ニューヨークの知識人・文人であるスーザン・コリンズ Susan Collins の新作の話があった。NYの地下に設定された都市を舞台にして5部作を書き、その次は叙事詩の3部作を書いているが、後者が新しい作品を出したとのこと。
 
私たちにとってJ・K・ローリングスのハリー・ポターを主人公とした作品がある。子供や青年向けだけでなく大人が読んでも面白い叙事詩があり、それとつながる別の叙事詩も少し読んでみたことがある。その中でスーザン・コリンズとニューヨークのつながりがとても印象に残ったけれども、一作品だけ読んで、それからの作品は一作も読んでいない。色々な意味でまた読みはじめてみよう。少し高額だったけど、一群の叙事詩を英語や日本語で買ってみた。夕べ、少し読んでみたけど、たしかに面白い。寝る前に読む文庫にしよう。
 
ただし、スーザン・コリンズというと、同名の保守中道の共和党上院議員がいるので、間違えないように(笑)

エドガー・アラン・ポーの『メールストロームの渦巻』のそばの小都市の名前

多くの人が Bing というサイトの風景図の写真を気に入っていると思う。私も仕事を始める前の風景写真がいい感じを与えてくれる。今日はノルウェイの Reine という小都市の美しい写真で、フィヨルドの湾に沿ってたたずむ町が美しい。オーロラが現れて神秘的な光景が現れるとのこと。背景には険しい山がそびえている。海と山と神秘的な夕方は、富士山を思わせる力がある(笑)
 
これはエドガー・アラン・ポーが『メールストロームの渦巻』で描いていた場所だろうかと思って、 Reine という小都市と Maelstrom の位置を確認してみたら、とても近い。その近くの小都市の名前は、これがなければ知ることがなかったと思う。
