英語の訛り

プロザックについての書物が非常に著名であるクラマー先生がもう一冊本を書いていて、そこで ego をアメリカ英語とイギリス英語で発音がどのように違うのかという話を書いていた。私は イギリス風が強く、そこにアメリカ風と日本風が混じりこんでいるというアクセントで、文頭の e を「イ」と読むというイギリス風のアクセントがある。economy を「エコノミー」ではなく「イコノミー」、ecology を「エコロジー」ではなく「イコロジー」と発音するという流れである。発音記号で書くとイギリスが ɪˈkɒnəmi 、アメリカが əˈkänəmē である。
アイスランドのクジラ博物館、ペニス博物館、そしてナプキン・コレクション
Atlas Obscula という楽しいサイトがある。世界の妙な観光地や土産物の案内のコレクション。今回の訪問は、新型ウィルスに対抗する日本のキャラの「アマビエ」を確認する仕事だったが、入口でアイスランドの博物館の紹介があった。私はアイスランドのファンである。理由は自分でも分からないが、若い頃にトナカイの養殖者になろうかと考えた時期があり、無根拠な連結でアイスランドのファンになったのかもしれない。その関連で、今から25年ほど前に、アイスランドから短期留学した若い大学生たちが、夜中の山手線で「アイスランドの首都を知っているか？」と大きな声で質問していたので、それに「レイキャビク！」と大声で答えたという輝かしい業績もある（笑）
そのアイスランドに関する記事を読みだして、やはりトリコになってしまった（笑） アイスランドの人口は30万人ほどで、博物館は小さなものが非常にたくさんある。数え方によっては300点もある。ある小さな町で人口は200人くらいだが博物館は7つあるとのこと。個人のコレクションみたいなものである。それを博物館と呼べるかどうかはよく分からない。その中で比較的立派なものはクジラ博物館とペニス博物館。クジラ博物館は本をKindle で売っていたので買ってみた。ペニス博物館の英訳は Phallological Museum で、phallological などという英語は存在しないが、ほとんどすべての人が意味が分かる（笑）
今回の記事の中心はナプキン・コレクション。アイスランドの女性のもので、1955年に始められ、個人で14,000点のナプキンを集めている。空港で貰ったとかピザ店でもらったとか、結婚式の時にもらったとか、よくわからないナプキンがとにかく集められている。あれはフォルダーというのだろうか、集めたノートがファイル上になっていて、並べると10メートルを超える長さになるだろう。なんだそれは（笑）
ジョン・クレアと迷信と狂気
エコノミスト・エスプレッソには、毎回、メールの最後に「今日の名言」のコーナーがある。毎日読んで、いい名言はセーブすることにしている。今日の名言はJohn Clare (1793-1864) 19世紀イギリスで著明な詩人が残した一言である。
“Superstition lives longer than books, it is engraved on the human mind ‘til it becomes a part of its existence.”
エコノミストではその雑誌らしく迷信をアタックする方向であり、著名なクレアも言っているという脈絡で出したのかもしれない。少し調べたら、それよりもずっと深い。きっと、より深いものにしているのは、クレアは晩年の20年間ほどを精神病院で過ごしたことである。昔の話になるが、私は実際にその精神病院に行ってみた。緑の芝生と庭園に囲まれた美しい田園の精神病院で、史料に関してご相談した。そのことを考えて、この文芸評論のこの名言を読むと、深い意味を持つようになる。10月の報告にそなえて、この話からはじめよう。Jonathan Bates によるクレアの伝記の決定版は 801円という安さ、また以下の URL がこの名言のコンテクストの説明です。
