J. Worth Estes, Dictionary of Protopharmacology: Therapeutic Practices, 1700-1850 (1990)

Root (actually, the corm) of meadow, saffron, widely neglected because of its toxicity until Dr Anton Stroerck of Vienna and others began to popularize it in the 1760s.  Used chiefly as an anodyne narcotic in gout and as a potent but undependable diuretic and diaphoretic in various fevers.  Side effects include vomiting, bloody stools, severe abdominal pain, bradycardia, and stupor, as the dose increases.  The active alkaloid, colchicine, isolated in 133 by Philipp Lorenz Geiger and Germain Henri Hess of Heidelberg, is still important in the therapy of gout.
