『秘密の花園』とコレラと男性ヒステリー
今日のDNBはフランシス・エリザ・ホジソン・バーネット (1849-1924). 日本だと『小公子』『小公女』の二つの19世紀児童文学が圧倒的な人気があった。私の本がそうだったが、この二つの作品を一冊の本にまとめることが多く、そのせいで『秘密の花園』は少年にはあまり読まれていない。というか、恥ずかしいけど、私は実はほとんど読んでいなかったです。今日は『秘密の花園』を少し読み、驚愕したことを二つメモ。
この話はわがまま放題に育ったメアリー・レノックスの豊かな家にコレラが襲い掛かるという冒頭ではじまる。メアリは病気がちで不機嫌な子供に育ち、インド人の召使たちを言うなりに使い、ガヴァネスは、あまりにわがままなメアリ3か月以上働き続けた女性は一人もいなかった。そんなある日、メアリの館にコレラが襲い掛かった。使用人たち母親が死に、多くの人物が逃走した。その間、メアリの存在すらも意識されなかった。このコレラの来襲から何とか発見されたメアリの物語である。なんてことだ。
そして、後半の重要な場面ではコリンという少年がヒステリーとなる。メアリという少女がコリンという少年に向かって「このヒステリー、ヒステリー、ヒステリー！」と連呼するという、ある意味で美しい状況が作り出される。なんという児童文学だろう。
DNB によると、彼女はマンチェスター付近に生まれる。父親は金物業の職人であったが、38才で死亡し、母親とフランシスはアメリカのテネシーに移住した。一家は貧しかったが、彼女が20才のころに人気がある小説を書いて有名になり、家を支えたとのこと。25歳のときに医者と結婚した。文学的な才能を利用して著名になり、階級的に上昇したと言える。ただ、その結婚は安定せず、フランシスは長期の不在をしてイギリスやヨーロッパに滞在して、有名人のヘンリー・ジェイムズなどとも親交があった。
