3月11日に、慶應日吉キャンパスで、2014年度の大学院のセミナーの「締め」として、出席した学生とPDを中心にして、英語で報告・ディスカッションをするワークショップを開催した。これは、私としては初めての試みで、大きな手ごたえがあった。以下、簡単に説明と反省。
報告については、非常に出来が良かった。どの報告も一定の水準をクリアしていたこと、多くの報告が非常に優れていた。これは、もともとできる学生だったということもあるが、もともとの授業において、英語を書く能力を伸ばす仕組みは取り入れていて、毎週英語や日本語のテキストを読み、それを英語で要約したエッセイを書いてネット上で公開するという仕組みを持っていたことが貢献しているだろう。
一方、Q&Aにおいては、弱さが露呈された。報告においては一流の内容のものを書けるつわものたちが、Q&Aではまったく機能しなくなってしまう。ディスカッションを英語で行う能力。これをどうして伸ばせるか考えて、大学院の授業に組み込むのが、今後の課題。
大学院セミナーを英語ワークショップで終わるのは、とてもいいアイデアで、これからも続けていこうと思う。実際、学生やPDの反応も非常によかった。春学期の終わり、秋学期の終わりと、一年に二回、このように英語で報告するワークショップを設定してくれという声すら出たほどである（笑）
