seeks an outstanding scholar for the position of a

Research Scholar

Starting date 01 September 2017

TVÖD E14-15, roughly comparable to assistant professor/associate professor.

The position is for three years, with the possibility of renewal for another three years.

Candidates should have a doctorate in hand and a strong publication record in the field of history of science and technology, preferably with a regional focus on Asia. They should show evidence of scholarly promise in the form of publications or other achievements. A previous postdoctoral position is desirable.

Applications from scholars working in the fields of the history of science in Asia are especially welcome.

Research projects may concern any historical period. Research projects within the following areas are particularly welcome:

- The Body of Animals: (https://www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/en/research/projects/departmentSchaefer_Animals), Animals as Methods, questions concerning animals as resources and energy

- Histories of Planning: (https://www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/en/research/projects/departmentSchaefer_HistoriesOfPlanning), in particular projects related to scale and scaling as a scientific practice and tool of production and/or science as collective knowledge

The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science is an international and interdisciplinary research institute (http://www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/en/index.html).

International experience is highly desirable. The administrative responsibilities of Research Scholars within the Department are decided in consultation with the Director and will be shared with other members of the scholarly staff.

There are no formal teaching obligations, but the Institute and Department hold regular colloquia. The MPIWG provides excellent support for research, including travel funds and the opportunity to organize conferences on topics related to the Research Scholar’s interests. Salaries are commensurate with academic experience and qualifications.

It is expected that candidates will be able to present their own work and discuss that of others fluently in English. Applications may be submitted in German, English, Chinese or French.
