Description

The Department of the History of Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine invites applications for tenure-track faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor. The Department is committed to broadening the history of health and medicine, and seeks a new colleague to address areas not covered by existing faculty, specifically in the history of medicine, health and healing in East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa, or other geographical areas which would extend the reach of our Department. We seek a scholar whose research is innovative and agenda-setting. Our teaching remit stretches across several divisions of the University, including PhD and online MA students within our department’s degree-granting programs, MD and MPH students within the broader schools of medicine and public health at Johns Hopkins, and undergraduates and graduate students through joint appointment in the Program of History of Science, Medicine, and Technology at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Founded in 1929, the Institute of the History of Medicine is dedicated to promoting scholarship on the history of medicine, disease, and the health sciences, and their relation to society, and to fostering a lively and collegial intellectual community. In addition, the Institute seeks to bring historical perspectives to bear on contemporary health issues. Faculty members teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the Schools of Medicine, Arts and Sciences, and Public Health. The Institute possesses an extensive collection of primary and secondary sources on the history of medicine. The collection is a valuable resource for department faculty and students and attracts visiting scholars from around the world.
