医療英会話キーワード辞典。一日3ページずつ音読。今日はpp.122-124.「過失」から「家族」まで。今日のハイライトは「家族」。一頁が2列に分かれているのですが、その一列が「家族」でした。面白かったのは immediate family の訳語が「肉親」であることでした。素晴らしい訳語であると同時に、例えば「養子」などは入れないのでしょうかね。

華氏

今日の英会話では「華氏」が出てきた。一時期は、必要な脈絡で出てきて、調べて、頭の中でゆっくり計算すると、なんとかなったが(笑)、すぐに忘れてしまう(涙)今回も書いておくが、どうせこれからも何度も調べては泣くのだろうと思います(笑)

華氏はドイツの自然哲学者のガブリエル・ファーレンハイトが1724年に発表した温度の測定法。水の融点を32°F、水の沸点を212°Fとして、その間を180で割ったものがファーレンハイトの温度になる。ちなみに1742年には、スウェーデンのアンデルス・セルシウスが現在でも私たちが使っている温度の測定法を発表した。

イギリスでは、私が留学した頃はファーレンハイトで、いまは両方使っているらしい。ファーレンハイトだと、だいたい100°Fが、セルシウスの37°Cくらいになる。100という数字で一つの区切りが生じるのはたしかに分かりやすい。

しばらく前に廣川先生が書いていらっしゃいましたが、ウェルカム財団がロンドンの科学博物館に3,000点の世界の医学史の展示をしているとのこと。ロンドンの科学博物館博物館はとてもいいゾーンで、並びに自然史博物館もあり、ハロッズやブティック街もあります。そちらに医学史展を置いたのは大きな進出ですね。

医学史の中級必読論文集

2015年に刊行された Roger Cooter and Claudia Stein, The History of Medicine: Critical Concepts in Historical Studies  に目を通す機会があった。主として2000年以降に刊行された論文を中心に、必読論文を57本集めている。古代から現代まで、医療に関する優れた論文である。全体で4巻本にまとめてあり、古代中世、初期近代、近現代、ポストモダニズムという時代区分である。ことに私にとって価値が高いのは、第4巻のMedicine in Postmodernity という巻である。半分くらいがこれまでカバーしていない論文である。価格は全体で5万円弱。彼らが書いたわけではない既刊の論文などを集めたものを5万円で買うかどうか、迷うところですね。
