LRBに速報。感染症、免疫、細胞生物学を専門とされるルパート・ビール先生が、今回のパンデミックはどのようになるかというエッセイを書いています。20世紀末からの経験を書き、20世紀の感染症の歴史学者としてもとても面白いです。彼が最後をまとめている3つのポイント。かなり大きいと予想しています。 1. これは通常のビジネスではなく、1918年のインフルエンザ以来の大流行になるだろう、2. 初期の段階で社会において距離付けをすることが必要だろう、3. この大流行を人類が乗りきることができるだろう、しかしパンデミックやワクチンについて新しい大きな変化を経験するだろう、とのこと。ぜひ全体もお読みください！

シチリアのミイラが写真集になりました

しばらく前に記事にしたシチリアのミイラに関して。写真集になりました。標本の保存というよりもアートになっており、おそらく優れた文学的な解説がつくと思います。リプリントは非常に高いようですが、普通の本なら35ポンド。

イアン・シンクレアが解説を書いています。たまたま彼のロンドンの歴史の本を読みはじめて、素晴らしい解説なのだろうなと思います。

以下はしばらく前に書いた記事です

 

BBCのReel の特集。シチリア島で1900年少し後まで継続したミイラ状の遺体保存について。全体で20分ほどの映像が提供される。エジプトを除くと、世界中で最もミイラ状に遺体を保存するケースが多いとのこと。おそらく1500年くらいに始まり、それから数世紀間継続して、第一次世界大戦後に人々は忘れてしまったとのこと。なぜそのように保存されたかという問題だが、シチリアの気候の問題もあり、エジプトと近いという事情もあり、ミイラ状に保存する高い技術もあった。特別な技術と特別な施設を使うため、身分が高い人々や富裕な人々がそのような保存を受けている。生命倫理学に従えば映像化できなかった図像で継続される。
 
シチリアの自然人類学の中で強く取り上げられている主題であり、これを世界に広めようという動きもある。夏の学校という形で、世界中から学者や学生が集まって、この素材を実際に用いて研究することができる。疾病や食料などが大きな主題になる。日本からも研究者が行くといいだろう。ただ、日本には墓場にある人骨という非常に難しい主題があり、それを分析できる日が来るかどうかは分からない。医学史の学者としてはもちろん非常な興味があるが、このタイプの研究の構成がよく分からないという事情もある。

ミクソウィルスとコロナウィルスと新ラテン語

医学史で私が苦手な主題はたくさんあるが、その一つが「ウィルス」である。20世紀の後半のことをまだよく知らないからである。その中で、コロナウィルスとミクソウィルスの違いがまだわかっていない。いい画像を持っていて説明されるとわかるが、その仕事をずっとしていない。うううむ。
 
いまの日本では新型感染症と呼ばれているが、英語では CORVID-19 。これは coronavirus disease 2019 を略して CORVID-19 という。コロナウィルス coronavirus という単語は、1968年に Nature の報告で初めて使われた単語。電子顕微鏡で撮影した写真が、球形（あるいは円形？）から多くの突起が出ていることに特徴があり、この突起が、太陽の周りに観察される「コロナ」に似ているからだという。彼らが「コロナに似ている」という記述のときに、較べられたのは、インフルエンザを起こすミクソウィリス myxovirus である。ミクソウィルスが持つ突起は鋭くとがっていて、このウィルスからの突起は丸くなっていて、コロナに似ているという説明である。私がもっている Viral Infections of Humans なども突起の鋭さと丸さの違いをあげている。
 
現在のミクソウィルスとコロナウィルスの画像をネット上で較べると、もちろんこの対比を見つけることは可能である。しかし、かなり似ている画像もある。二つのウィルスのグループは突起が違うのだという記述が、成立しそうだけれどもよくわからない。ミクソウィルスの突起の尖端は丸いものがかなり多いし、コロナウィルスは、それだけ見たら、かなり鋭くとがっているものが多い。
 
ミクソウィルスが発見されたのが1950年代、コロナウィルス coronavirus という単語が初めて使われたのが1968年である。この段階で、ミクソと較べるとコロナに似ているという報告がされたのだろう。 その頃の画像を確認しておくと、きっと、太陽のコロナに似ているというコメントが分かるのだろうと思う。
 
もうひとつ。「コロナウィルス」は1968年に作られた新ラテン語であるということに初めて気がついた。corona と virus のいずれもラテン語である。1968年につくられた新ラテン語。複数形は普通は coronaviruses だが、そのうち coronaviri でもよくなるかもしれない（笑）   
 

オカルトな血液とCORVID-19

CORVID-19をめぐって、イタリアのヴェニスが検疫をしている。これの発祥はもちろん14世紀の黒死病の頃の対策で、この世紀に quarantine 40日間の動きの禁止などがされていた。
 
それよりも重要なのは、非常に新しい感染症のモデルが現れていることである。その疾病にかかっているかどうか分からない人々が感染源である可能性が高いという新しいモデルである。感染症がある意味で、「それらしくない人」が伝える普通の現象となっている。
 
そんなことを意識しながら別の仕事をしていたら、occult という医学用語に出会った。もちろん自然哲学や錬金術などの occult の存在は知っている。かなり苦手な概念だが、一度パラケルスス主義に関して章を一つ書いたときに、少しだけわかるようになった。さらに、現在の医学の世界でも occult という用語が使われており、化学や病理のことを考えながら、パラケルスス主義風の概念とかなり近いことを知った。
 
無症候 (asymptomatic) であり、オカルト (occult) であること。20世紀の始めにはすでに始まり、20世紀の末からはっきりと目立つようになったと思う。
