16世紀末の精神病院は文学者たちによってどのように表象されたのかという主題がある。イギリスだと、シェイクスピア関連の学者たちにとっては慣れ親しんでいる主題だろうし、『憂鬱の解剖』などをゆっくり読む時間があればいいなあと思う。他の国のことも知りたいが、本を少し読んでいるくらいである。イタリアでは、1586年に刊行された『不治の狂気の精神病院』という面白い文学がある。まだこの時期のイタリア文学のことが全然分かっていないなあと思いながら読んでいたら、突然日本人たちが登場したので驚愕してぶっとんだ。日本から送られた男性と女性たちで、数えると合計で一万二千人の日本人である(笑）これはもちろんある狂気の人物の妄想の中に出てくる日本人たちである。
もちろん私は素人なので知らないことが多い。その範囲での推察だが、天正遣欧使節で日本人の少年たちがヨーロッパやローマを訪れたことときっと関係があるのだろうかと思う。ローマ法王に面接したのが1585年だから、出版の前年であり、いいタイミングであるような気がする。また、日本から人々が送られてきたというラインであることはその通りである。詩は、まだ読んでいないが、１６世紀初頭から中葉に出版された『狂えるオルランド』などの事象が言及されているとのこと。もちろんエラスムス『痴愚神礼賛』も大きな背景であるとのこと。このような人文主義の中で日本の遣欧使節も言及されたのならば、とても面白い。著者に一筆書いてみますね。
Thanks to madness, he has not only silver,
Gold, villas, cities, provinces and kingdoms,
But the entire universe is at his disposal.
And being in power, he creates great projects:
Drying out the seas and lowering great mountains,
so that he may make an eternal mark.
It seems to him that everybody is read
