シカゴ大学で博士号を取得され、現在ハーバードで講師をしていらっしゃるキャサリン・ゴールドファーブ先生に、ご講演いただけることになりました。ゴールドファーブ先生は日本の児童福祉の現場で長期フィールドワークを行い、子供の発達や日本の家族、福祉の問題について鋭い視点で分析を行っている気鋭の若手人類学者です

Japanese child welfare and the politics of the normal
Abstract:
Activists hoping to reform the Japanese child welfare system place
concepts of “normal” child development and national development in
parallel, so that delayed or developmentally disordered children within
the child welfare system are seen as reflections on the impoverished
developmental status of the Japanese state itself. While this discursive
practice may motivate policy change, representational practices of child
welfare activists themselves inadvertently contribute to the elision of
people whose bodies and developmental paths do not map onto easily
articulated policy goals. Further, activists’ citation of “normally” and
“abnormally” developed bodies and brains reifies the concept of “normal”
development itself. Early childhood becomes a screen for the projection
of representational desires, onto which policy problematics and
(inter)national representations of Japan itself are circulated.
