数日前の OED の今日の英単語が pataphysics という英単語を掲げていた。これは、フランスの近現代の作家であるアルフレッド・ジャリ(1873-1907) が作り出した概念である。自由自在な勝手さを持ち、一方で鉄の規則に厳密に従いながら、へんてこりんな世界を作り出す硬質な原理である。私が大学に入ったばかりの1982年には、ジャリの作品についての不思議なブームが私の周りにあった。懐かしくてOEDの記述やジャリの記述を読んだところ、フランス文学の中で重要であったということのほかに、家族の中に精神疾患があったとのこと。父親はセールスマンだがアルコール中毒であり、母親は音楽と文学が好きだったが、精神病院で過ごしていた。父親と母親は1890年代のロシア風邪と呼ばれるインフルエンザで没し、アルフレッドもそれにかかったが死亡はしなかった。しかし、アルコールの飲みすぎ、薬物中毒などに影響され、結核で1907年に没する。この疾病の組み合わせは、失礼な言い方かもしれないが、医学史に適した文学者だなあと思いながら、慶應で借りていくつかの作品に目を通しておいた。
『ユビュ王』のあとがきを書いた竹内健や、『フォーストール博士の言行録』の相磯佳正によると的確な表現がたくさんあったからメモしておく。「「パタフィジック」という概念は「パタフィジックとは、形而上学の内部ないしは外部につけ加わり、且つ形而上学が形而下学から隔たっている程に形而上学から隔たっている学問である」という、どうでもいいけど、厳密に決まっているものである（笑） フォーストロール博士(Fausttroll) と主人公は、ゲーテのファウストとスカンディナヴィアの異民族なり怪物なりの意味の troll を組み合わせたもの。あるいはイプセンのペール・ギュントからとったものであるとのこと。ここでペール・ギュントは、たしかに音楽ではなく戯曲だったという気づき（笑）そしてフォストロール博士は「背丈は中背であり、より正確を期すならば、原子の直径を8×1010（以下省略） だけ並べた距離に等しく、皮膚は黄金色で顔には毛がないが、しかしサレー王の肖像のような海の緑色をしたひげがあり、髪は毛の一本一本が交互に灰色がかったブロンドと黒髪に分かれており、陽の照り具合によってはボケた赤褐色に変わり、眼は、金の精虫をたらしたゴールデン・リキュールにつくられたインキの壺のフタが二個並んでいるのに似ている」という。どうでもいいけど、なんだその精密さはという感じですね（笑）
精神病院の症例誌や患者による物語を読んでいると、たしかにジャリが作り出した世界と似た部分があるので、覚えておこう。
