ラウトレッジから『狂気と精神医療の歴史』が新刊されました。グレッグ・エギガン先生が編集した精神医療の歴史の大全であり、この段階で出すことができる最高の書物です。世界各地の多くの地域を主題として取り上げ、近現代の精神医療が持つ複雑な構成に対応する主題を論じることができる学者を動員して編集されたものです。地域としては、もちろん欧米が中心ですが、他の地域も積極的に取り上げられており、ラテンアメリカ、南アジア、アフリカ、日本が選ばれています。主題としては、精神病院、精神疾患の分類、宗教、文学と芸術、視覚芸術、精神医療の「マテリアル・カルチャー」、患者の視点、高齢社会、情動、身体療法、心理療法など。全体で400頁、21章からなっています。
この半世紀ほどの精神医療の歴史は、ミシェル・フーコーやロイ・ポーターといった物故した偉大な思想家や学者たち、ハーマン・ベリオスやアンドリュー・スカルなど、今でも活躍している優れた学者たちの仕事を出発点として目覚ましく発展しました。多様な主題にわたって、医学だけでなく人文社会科学の視点や方法を取り込んで、発展と洗練を続けている領域になりました。私は30年以上にわたって、学生・学者としての研究のほとんどを精神医療の歴史に注いできましたが、30年間で、私たちはここまで来ることができたのかという感慨を持っています。
