名言集を変えました。アメリカ合衆国の第三代大統領にして思想家のトマス・ジェファソンが1807年に医者に書き送った手紙の中に出てくる言葉です。
自然治癒力と、それを操作できる医療の人為の力の双方を信じるのは、自分が医者でなくても啓蒙主義のインテリにとっての信仰箇条だったのでしょうね。 この自然と人為のバランスが、19世紀には大きく「自然」のほうに、20世紀には大きく「人為」のほうに変わっていく、というまとめ方ができるのかも。
なお、ジェファソンの言葉は以下のように続くようです。
Having been so often a witness to the salutary efforts which nature makes to re-establish the disordered functions, he [a physician] should rather trust to their action, than hazard the interruption of that, and a greater derangement of the system, by conjectural experiments on a machine so complicated & so unknown as the human body, & a subject so sacred as human life.
