LRBより カミュ『ペスト』の評論
しばらく前から、LRBより covid-19 と文化や社会の関係に関する深い思索のメールが来ている。今日は ジャクリーヌ・ローズ先生が書かれているカミュの『ペスト』の評論で、非常に面白い。多くの皆さまは読んだことがあるだろうし、医学史の教員は、感染症の流行が政治的な深さ、生活と医療へと深く食い込んでいくありさまを読んで、ナチス・ドイツの批判だとか、そのようなことを読んでいるだろう。ローズ先生の評論は5,000語の素晴らしい評論で、パンデミックの折の評論の仕方を感じさせる。
このタイミングで、読みたいなとは思っていた、これは私だけではないだろうが、amazon の「おすすめの本」で無敵の一位だったこともある。この週末に英語で原作も読んでおき、始まるオンラインの授業に対応しておこう。
中世のホスピタルとハンセン病患者収容所の場所の地図化
東大の非常勤で病院やホスピタルを通史で教える授業があり、準備を進めている。中世ヨーロッパのハンセン病収容所を一回で講義する授業で、ハンセン病の患者に対する差別的で攻撃的な態度と、そのような患者を許すことがキリスト教の特徴であるという肯定的な態度の双方を教えなければならない。そこで便利になるのが Carole Rawcliffe, Leprosy in Medieval England (2006) で、これをみると差別性と肯定性の双方を地図で憶えることができる。差別性を段階を持ったものとして描くことができる。これは中世のノリッジの地図で、そこでは、ホスピタルや、老人を中心とする救貧院は、街の中心ではないが、壁の内側に置かれた施設である。一方、壁の外側にはハンセン病患者の収容所を置く。しかし、それらはどれも壁の直近であって、世界の果てではない。この両義性をきちんと説明しなければならない。もうひとつ、同じような資料で、ルーアンの街と近郊の地図を使っている Brenner の書物もあり、これは現代の地図に修道院とハンセン病患者の収容所を書き込んでみた。
シブリーの北米野鳥ガイド
その理由はまったく分からないけれども、アメリカでバードウォッチングをしたことはあまりないが、カナダではよくある。観光地へのバスの窓から双眼鏡を覗くこともあり、とても楽しかった。それもあってアメリカの野鳥ガイドを買った。英語では guide, 日本ではフィールドガイドと呼ばれている、手持ちの案内である。アメリカでは David Allen Sibley が執筆して図柄も描いた The Sibley Guide of Birds がよいとのことで、それを買った。もちろんオーデュボン協会から出版されている。
今朝はそのライチョウ grouse の項目を見ていて、とても楽しかった。アメリカでライチョウを見に行くようなことがあるかもしれない。前のページはキジ pheasant で、ヨーロッパや日本のキジについての記述もあった。
オーデュボンのミニ画集とライチョウの乱交
新刊の『オーデュボンの鳥』の広告を日本野鳥の会の月刊誌『野鳥』で見た。もちろん名前は聞いたことがあるが、作品や伝記を見たことも買ったこともないことに気がつき、英語の伝記とこの書物を買った。画集はすぐに到着した。2,000円で買える素晴らしいミニ画集で、全体の450点ほどの巨大なサイズの画集を縮小し、そこから150点ほどを選び抜いたとのこと。また、画像だけでなく、個々の種類に関する、短いけれども圧縮されて緊張感がある記述である。思わず読み進んでしまった。たとえば「ソウゲンライチョウ」はこのようになっている。
トルコ帽ユリの咲く草原で、上と右がオス。キジ目ライチョウ科。全身41-47cm, 全身淡褐色の黒の横斑、短い冠羽。春になるとオスは一個所に集まり、山吹色をした目の上の羽毛と頸の気嚢を膨らませて唸り声を上げ、集まってきたメスと次々に交尾する。主に種子や葉、昆虫を食す。
一箇所に集まったオスたちが唸り声を上げながらメスたちと次々と交尾をするありさまを19世紀のオーデュボンがどのように描いたのか。それも、ことに私生児でハイチで生まれフランスに帰りアメリカに来た彼がどう処理したのか。はやく伝記を読みたいです！
