「医学史研究の過去・現在・未来」という評論を書いている。医学史がどのように進んできて、これからどちらに進むのかということを、隣接した領域である科学史の研究者にわかるように書かなければならない。一つ、面白いまとめ方を考え付いたのでメモしておく。
ケンブリッジ大学の医学史研究室が、新しい医学史研究を切り開くような論文集を次々と発表していた時期がある。1985年から2005年までの20年間にわたってそういう仕事がされていたのかと感慨深い。まずは、1985年から1992年にかけて、医学の思想と実践に関する領域に関する側面が問われた。ルネッサンス―宗教改革―啓蒙主義―実験室という主題に沿って時代順に出版されていった。1997年から2005年は、救貧と医療という側面に関して、4巻の論文集としてまとめられている。近世・近代を、1500年から1700年と、1700年から1900年の二つの時期にわけ、さらに、プロテスタント―ヨーロッパ北部と対抗宗教改革―ヨーロッパ南部の二つの地域にわけて、2×2=4巻本ということになる。ケンブリッジの医学史研究室は、その他にも多くの論文集を出版しているが、この8冊の論文集は医学史の中枢の問題を扱ったものであったし、私たちにとって重要な研究のセットであった。
