来週の一般教養の歴史学は、15世紀の末からのヨーロッパにおける梅毒の流行と対策の話をする。もちろん医療と疾病の社会史の話で、梅毒患者を中心とした「不治の」患者を収容する病院の話が中心になるが、そこは梅毒とシモの話だから、コンドームの発明の話もエピソードとして触れる。有名な逸話としては、Dr Condom という名前の17世紀のイギリスの医者がいて、彼が淫行で名高い国王のチャールズ二世のために発明したという、憶えやすくて愛されているエピソードがあるが、もちろんそんな名前の医者・偽医者は見つかっていないし、メアリー・ドブソンのような歴史学者は、おそらくラテン語の condere 「隠す、覆う」という語から派生したのだろうと言っている。
ドブソンが引用している面白いエピソードは、コンドームをフランスに注文してその到着を今か今かと待っていたイギリスの紳士たちは「フレンチ・レターズ」といい、フランスからイギリスに来た人々は「イギリス人の外套」と呼んでいたということである（これはカサノヴァも使っていた用語だと思う）。梅毒は、ヨーロッパのどの国も、気に入らない外国から来たと考えて、「イタリア病」「スペイン病」「フランス病」（これが一番広まったとのこと）などと呼んでいたが、コンドームもそうだったのか。
ちなみに、日本ももともとは中国や沖縄から来たということで「唐瘡」「琉球瘡」と呼んでいたが、中国医学の名称である「楊梅瘡」という言い方が医者たちには人気であった（富士川『日本医学史』）。これがくずれて梅瘡・梅毒になったのだろうか。それを黴毒と書くのはどういう変化だろうか。ちなみに、「楊梅」というのはヤマモモの漢名で、梅毒の皮膚につくるできものがこの実に似ているからだろう。
私は知らなかったが、アーニェ・コリア『コンドームの歴史』(2010)という書物が翻訳されている。授業の前に一応目を通しておく。
もう一つ、OEDでも引用されていて、時々一般向けの歴史書でも付け加えられている引用に、「ポケットに＜緑か紅のリボンで結ばれたコンドームをポケットに入れている男は幸せである」という文章がある。この「緑か紅のリボン」というのは、いったいどういう意味があるのだろうと思って調べ始めたが、これは『コンドーム讃辞』という詩の一節で、しかもその詩が何かを介してミルトンの『失楽園』に繋がれているということがわかって、簡単には分からないだろうと思ってあきらめました。
